Innovative Raw Material from Tire Recycling

Tire Pyrolysis Oil (TPO) is a dark brown liquid produced through pyrolysis of used tires. It is a unique secondary product that is not conventional crude oil but represents a promising alternative to fossil raw materials in many industrial sectors.

Composition and Properties

TPO is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons with carbon numbers ranging from C5 to C50, including both aliphatic and aromatic compounds. Over 50% of its composition consists of aromatic hydrocarbons, and part of the carbon has biological origin from natural rubber present in tires.

Typical Composition of TPO:
Carbon: approx. 83%
Hydrogen: approx. 6.6%
Oxygen: approx. 8.6%
Nitrogen: approx. 0.3%
Sulfur: approx. 1%

TPO exhibits a wide boiling point range – from 70°C to 450°C – and may take a semi-solid form at lower temperatures.

Applications and Potential

After appropriate purification and distillation, TPO can be used as:
+ Raw material for chemical and petrochemical industries,
+ Feedstock for production of technical carbon black (CB), using xylene present in TPO,
+ High-value carbon product due to high carbon content,
+ Additive to diesel fuel in combustion engines.

Product of the Future

Sustainable Development and Circular Economy

In the context of increasing demand for circularity and reduced dependency on fossil resources, TPO becomes an increasingly valued secondary resource. Its use contributes to:
- Reduction of emissions associated with fossil fuels,
- Efficient management of used tires,
- Improved profitability and attractiveness of recycling processes on a global scale.
